South Lawn (White House)

Located south of the White House in Washington, D.C., the South Lawn is a significant portion of the grounds of the presidential residence of the United States. The lawn is bordered by East Executive Drive and the Treasury Building to the east, West Executive Drive and the Old Executive Office Building to the west, and South Executive Drive and the Ellipse public lawn to the south.

Historically open to the public prior to World War II, the South Lawn is now a private part of the White House grounds. The lawn hosts both formal and informal events, including arrival ceremonies for visiting state guests, the annual egg roll contest, and staff barbecues. It is also the landing and takeoff point for the presidential helicopter, Marine One.
